We have been working with Croxton School to assist them with their Advance Leadership program for 24 of their older students. Advance is a school-based program for young people to volunteer in their community and have a positive role in society. It is a partnership between the DHHS, Victorian Government secondary schools and community organisations. It provides students with the opportunity to contribute positively in the community, plan projects, meet new people, build skills and make a difference.
We had a number of highlights throughout the program:
• A spin class & information session at the Centre about working at the Y.
• All 24 students volunteered across 3 YMCA sites (Carlton Baths, Kensington & Northcote) for 6 hours over 3 weeks. They helped cleanup program areas, serve at the front desk and it gave them a chance to implement skills learnt during the program.
• One student was a successful volunteer for the Father’s Day Fun Run and was at the baggage drop-off for the event. Aside from contributing to the event, his highlight was getting a photo with Peter Hitchener!
• We are now working towards providing permanent weekly volunteering opportunities for a number of their students. We have appointed 3 successful candidates and are in the process of inducting them.
The experiences we have given the students has been life-changing. In their words, they now have a belief in themselves and look forward to a better future.
