Croxton swimming

For the last 2 weeks we have had 20 very happy & excited students form Croxton School coming daily to the pool to participate in free swimming lessons paid for by Swimathon Funding.  The school couldn’t believe it when they were contacted and offered a free 2 week program for their students.  Giving to those who need it most is what working for the Y is all about!

The 20 students who attended the program were considered the most “at risk” students who needed the extra lessons to improve their water safety skills.  Under the instruction of a team of dedicated instructors, the students improved out of sight.  There were students who had never put their head under water doing torpedos, there were students swimming full laps when they could only do torpedos, there were kids floating on their backs who were too scared to take their feet off the bottom – the improvement was incredible.  I’m not sure who got the most out of the program – the instructors or the students!

On the last session, the group received a visit from Swimming Australia and Yampu, the official mascot of the Optus Junior Dolphins.  The students were thrilled with the surprise visitor, their show bags and certificates which they received in recognition of all their hard work.  We look forward to having the school back in Term 1 to capitalise on the skills they have already learned.
