Carlton Baths beat a high-quality list of nominations to be named the 2016 Leisure Facility of the Year at the Parks and Leisure Australia (PLA) state conference dinner on Tuesday, 23 May.

The recently redeveloped City of Melbourne facility celebrated its 100th birthday in 2016 and is managed by YMCA Victoria in close collaboration with Council.

Carlton Baths saw significant growth across 2016 and into 2017 with a net membership increase of 7.5 per cent. This was complemented by improvements in the number and variety of dry and aquatic based programs. These included the creation and launch of two innovative outreach programs – Active Bodies and Get Wet, designed to engage with community members outside the Centre.

Acting Carlton Baths Manager Lloyd Parkin was thrilled with the PLA award and said it was the result of the excellence and dedication of staff in partnership with the City of Melbourne.

“Our partnership with the City of Melbourne continues to grow and strengthen and this has helped us develop Carlton Baths as a Centre of preference throughout the local community. Staff are committed to continuous improvement and the best possible customer service and this has been proven by the high level of positive customer feedback,” he said.

“At Carlton Baths we understand that every one of our staff members makes our Centre what it is and we aim to reward and develop all of our staff, from casuals through to management. This award is a testament to the success of this positive culture.”

Parkin added that the collaborative approach to environmental sustainability between Council and the YMCA had resulted in a major impact on the Centre’s environmental footprint.

“Council’s recent $4.5m aquatic redevelopment of the facility provided the opportunity to implement environmentally friendly options such as timers on fridges, LED lighting and strategic backwashing,” he said.

“Utility use is tracked at Carlton Baths and projects to minimise utilities and waste throughout the Centre have been implemented.”

The Centre has led the way in other areas of operation including member acquisition and engagement along with marketing and communication innovation. Carlton Baths were also awarded (Life Saving Victoria) Platinum Pool accreditation in 2016, one of only 15 pools in Victoria to achieve this standard.

The PLA award continued Carlton Baths recent success after the facility also won the 2016 YMCA of the Year.
