KPMG and The Bridge Project

KPMG has been a key supporter of YMCA Bridge Project every step of the way.

YMCA Bridge Project was first formed in 2005 in response to an issue identified by the YMCA from our experience working inside every youth justice facility in Victoria.

We wanted to change the revolving door behaviour of young people leaving youth justice facilities - with 66% returning within 12 months.

KPMG was there from the very beginning of this important community initiative and has been a key contributor to the project’s success in radically reducing the rate of youth recidivism.

How did KPMG help?

Two of KPMG’s staff, Maria Lui and Adrian James, have been active members of the Bridge Project Council. Maria was one of the Council’s founding members. This voluntary Council has provided YMCA Bridge Project with the solid community connections required to find young people meaningful training and jobs.

KPMG has provided considerable pro-bono support to the Project over the past six years including economic modelling to demonstrate the project’s potential impact on the community. Their report clearly demonstrated a potential total cost avoidance of approximately $29.4 million over the next five years (2008 – 2012) and $8 million per annum to the State of Victoria thereafter.

The organisation has also provided its corporate offices for numerous Council meetings, sponsored tables at the annual YMCA Bridge Project breakfast and provided a venue for an intimate “Target 100” lunch for supporters with Patron Mick Malthouse in 2010.

What were the results?

Without a doubt KPMG’s support has contributed significantly to the considerable achievements of YMCA Bridge Project to date:

  • 97% reduction in the rate of young people returning to custody among participants provided with work and mentoring.
  • A safer Victorian community
  • A more inclusive Victorian community
